Punta Negra is a small, idyllic, authentic Creole coastal community just North of Punta Gorda with beautiful remote beaches and cool Caribbean breezes. The village is nestled between the Port of Honduras Marine Reserve to the front and the Payne’s Creek National Park to the rear and very hard to reach by road. Splendid Isolation, it certainly is!
Book a ferry/water taxi and make your way to the Negra Grill and Tavern, located right on the deserted beach of the village. The Grill specializes in traditional Creole foods prepared fresh each day. It is managed by the local Women’s Group with the help of TIDE, a local NGO. The fish the Grill serves can’t be fresher since it is caught close to the beach by fishermen of the village. The Negra Grill and Tavern prepares traditional Creole dishes such as whole snapper, rice and beans, and potato salad, using lots of fresh coconut in every meal, which is an important resource in Punta Negra (the Grill uses its own ‘home—made’coconut oil). Ask for Miss Paula’s coconut fudge or scramblers, which is the perfect sweet treat to finish your meal!
After a meal, enjoy the wonderful Caribbean sunshine and waters, take a stroll along the beach or relax in a hammock. Soak up that Caribbean vibe and, refreshed, return to PG for a well-deserved rest.
“The Creoles believe in a healthy lifestyle and we think it’s important to introduce guests to that part of our culture” says Suzette Jacobs, manager of the Negra Grill and Tavern. “We use the coconuts that grow here on the beach in Punta Negra in all our cooking and baking, and we even make oil from it. On request, we can offer cultural and cooking lessons or teach you how to make your own coconut oil! “
The Punta Negra Grill and Tavern is a perfect introduction to Creole culture and cooking located on the beach. It doesn’t get much better than this.
