Garifuna people believe illness is caused by a lost connection between us (realm of man) and the Ancestors (realm of spirit). The role of the healer in our tradition is to repair the connection, thereby restoring health to the complete individual. Indigenous Garifuna healings are usually conducted in the context of a ceremony, where elements, totems, and the ancestral spirits of both the healer and the heal-ee are consulted with for help.
“My name is Ana Nicolasa Arzu, known as Arzu Mountain Spirit. The people who really love me and know me just call me Arzu. I am a traditional healer, writer, life coach, teacher, and presenter of talks and workshops on Garifuna spirituality, healing methods, and medicinal plants. The Ancestral healing methods I hold dear were transmitted through my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I now live in Belize where I maintain a traditional healing practice, and facilitate Mountain Spirit Wellness Retreats.

I work with local Garifuna chefs who cater to our clientele. All meals are arranged by us for individuals and groups who participate in specified day-events, workshops and retreats”.

Traditional Garifuna foods are based on coconut milk, garlic, basil, black pepper, plantain, bananas, chicken and fish. Fish boiled in coconut milk, called “serre”, served with mashed plantain called “hudut”, is a delicious rich meal. Cassava (manioc) is also a famous part of Garifuna cuisine. Cassava is made into bread, drink, pudding and even wine. Try it out when in Toledo!

Cultural Products & Services offered include:

Bush Medicine – A 10-week course teaching the ancient and modern traditions of bush medicine.

Agouni – Herbal and ritual baths for spiritual cleansing used primarily for healing the three different levels of body, mind, and spirit.

Assupahani – Pain Seed Removal/Healing session is performed mostly in cases of chronic pain and any type of physical pain doctors cannot explain or find a cure for.

A consultation – A spiritual reading, vibrational and/or energetic clearing in which the Healer steps into a portal of the spiritual realm to receive messages from an individual’s ancestors and guides.

Plant Medicine Workshops – Offers a closer look at how the relationship of plant and person is harnessed. Herbs and the medicine they offer as well as secrets of how these herbal spirits work together are discussed.

Mountain Spirit Wellness Retreats – offers participants a highly individualized program where all attention is focused on the body/mind healing needs for the duration of the stay. The retreat package includes all meals, luxury accommodations in Belize, all ground transportation, and cultural immersion visits to traditional Maya and Garifuna villages and sacred sites.

Coaching – Offered to individuals who are preparing towards a calling that requires a strong functional relationship with the spirit world.
