Living Maya Experience

The Living Maya experience is a home visit that offers guests a fascinating glimpse into a fast disappearing world in which the local Maya depended upon the forest and found everything in it to satisfy their needs from food to furniture to medicine.

Anita and Chris Cal, the owners, showcase a Maya house the way it would have been 50 years ago before the modern world started to impinge. They have a bed in which the mattress is made of the rolled out bark of the Moho tree and a bench seat made out of balsa trunk. There is a wooden mangle used for squeezing sugar cane juice and wooden moulds to make the sugar caked!

They grow four sorts of different corn, white, yellow, red and black and keep a sack of berries for their guests from the soapberry tree to wash their hands. Food is cooked on an open fire hearth and drinking bowls are made from the calabsh fruit. They also prepare food for their guests who can roll up their sleeves and get involved with assisting in the cooking festivities with Anita and her daughters.

Grinding corn, cocoa or coffee on the age-old volcanic grinding stone or wrapping fish in waha-leaves and baking corn tortilla on the iron “comal” over the open fire are some of the tasks, which have to be performed.
Visits are fun, very kid-friendly and highly interactive with all five senses involved. On a tour around the garden, guests will smell and taste the herbs and spics used to season the Maya cuisine.
