Leela’s Bistro – Lila Vernon Memorial Museum & Culture House

Description:

Through Leela Vernon’s story, daughter Julet and son Franz bring to life Toledo’s incredible Creole history and culture over typical local dishes and a personal tour of the “Kriol” Museum.

Leela Vernon (1950-2017) was and is a Belizean cultural icon noted for her contributions to preserving Creole culture in the country and Toledo, Southern Belize. She was awarded the title “Queen of Brukdown”, received the Order of the British Empire for promoting Creole culture and music, and was named the Brukdown Artist of the Year in 2004.

While Julet is managing the Café and Museum, Franz is in the kitchen preparing the most incredible “Kriol” meals (try the fried Conch with Garlic and steamed veggies). He makes a mean espresso too..

As Julet puts it: “Leela’s Bistro is the place where we showcase the best of the traditional “Kriol” food and the cultural practices as we use fire-hearth and old-time grater to squeeze our own coconut milk that we use in our rice and beans”.

Ask for a personalized tour through the Museum, where Julet can show you the history of both Creole culture in Belize and her mother’s efforts to safeguard its heritage. Leela was the prominent voice for promoting the Creole culture in Southern Belize and Julet and Franz are continuing her amazing work.

Leela’s Bistro has regular live musical events. A drum-set stands in the middle of the restaurant and visitors are always invited to join and jam into the late, Punta Gorda night ..
