Indian Creek Mayan Arts Women’s Group

We are a six-women group family of Q’eqchiMayans who, seven years ago, decided that we wanted to share our culture, food, arts and craft and traditions with the visitors to the Nim Li Punit Archeological site located almost at our doorstep. We offer a very basic and simple traditional Maya kitchen; our traditional kitchen has a thatched roof, a mud floor and a firehearth made out of clay. Although our kitchen is unpretentious, the food that we share with our visitors is tasty, fresh and unlike any you will find elsewhere. All guests are treated with Maya hospitality – genuine friendship.

Our menu is limited but reflects the taste of authentic Maya food, seasoned with Maya spices and food grown on our father’s farm or bought at the local market. We can easily cater to the taste buds of meat lovers or vegetarians. With enough notice we can cater to pescatarians. We guarantee that a visit to our kitchen will be one of your most memorable meals and experiences.

Depending on what time you have available we offer a full day experience; we will greet you with a refreshing drink to quench your thirst after a long trip, this is then followed by a tasting of the cacao pod, the source of chocolate. We then invite you to join us in our kitchen to share with us the prepping of the food and the making of corn tortillas. However, if you choose to only observe that is fine as well. After the lunch is prepared and eaten we can take you on a short walk to a beautiful swimming hole, which is best during the rainy season. After the swim you can return to our arts and craft thatch or we can take you to pick fresh ‘jippy-jappa’ from our backyard garden.

This time, instead of eating it, we will show you how we prepare the leaves for weaving baskets, earrings or other small items. This is the perfect time to pick up gifts for yourself or your loved ones back home. We end the tour with traditional dancing and we invite you to participate in the festivities.
If you are only interested in lunch, you have the option to come by at an agreed time (please call) and you can enjoy one of our tasty meals.
