Colemans Café

Winner of BTB’s ‘Restaurant of the Year, 2017’

Coleman’s Cafe is ‘Where Good Food & Good People Meet’. We are an East Indian family owned and operated business in the Toledo District. Actually, we are one of the oldest business establishments in the Toledo district.
Our restaurant provides a Lunch Buffet to tourists on a daily basis. The Buffet includes a diversity of Belizean and East Indian delicacies including Rice & Beans, White Rice & Stew Beans, Stew/Bake/Tacari Chicken, Pork and/or Beef, Garden Salad and/or Coleslaw, Fried plantains, and of course, our signature dishes, Calaloo and Cohune Cabbage.

What’s Tacari? Well, East Indians in Belize use Yellow Ginger (Turmeric) powder to cook our Chicken or any meat. It provides a unique flavor and blend. We also include Coco, a traditional ground food, and Habanero Pepper (for spice). Cohune Cabbage is the heart of the Cohune Palm Tree. It is a mouth-watering vegetarian dish cooked with yellow ginger, garlic, cumin and local coconut oil. Calaloo is quite similar to Spinach, but much more delicious. Again, it’s a vegetarian dish sautéed to perfection with coconut oil and garlic. Of note, East Indians primarily consume more vegetables in our diet.

We also make Dahl Roti – a flour tortilla filled with cooked and seasoned split peas, fried to a sizzling light brown color. Chutney is a spicy side dish where we use the rubbing stone to finely rub coconut or mango and mix with various spices. (Reservations in advance for these)
Coleman’s Cafe is surrounded by lush vegetation including flowering plants, fruit trees, and shrubs which attracts many birds and iguanas. The colorful and sweet-smelling flowers adds an everlasting element of peace and warmth. We also have three parrots (Jerry, Jasmine & Lucy) who love to entertain our tourists. They all love to eat, mimic, and dance Punta.

Perlene is the proud owner (and very accomplished chef) of Coleman’s Café . Her son remembers:
“Many tourists have enjoyed our delicious home style breakfast, lunch and dinners. Many of them even asked my Mom to teach them how to cook certain dishes. They were always welcomed in the kitchen where we demonstrated how to make flour tortillas, Rice & Beans, Tacari Chicken, et al.
Guess what? Most of them went back to their country and tried the very recipes! However, they always said it didn’t turn out as perfect. The simple moments of conversation and cooking with our tourists are those that are loved, and forever remembered. Our Trip Advisor reviews speaks to this.
We would also go the extra mile to prepare food for groups on advance notice. They sit and wait or tour our beautiful gardens, visit the parrots and even the local chickens in the coop. ”
