Sitting outdoors on a covered deck with the salty breeze coming from the sea to cool off the heat of the day, the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. That’s Asha’s Culture Kitchen. Can’t be beat.
Asha’s Culture Kitchen is one of the all-time favorite restaurants in PG. Reliable staff, nice setting and always wonderful meals. Asha’s serves traditional food in Creole and Belizean flavor. The restaurant has a fishing and swimming pier where local fishermen catch and sell their products. It couldn’t get any fresher.
Specializing in seafood and vegetarian dishes. The owner, Asha, is a proud Creole and loves to engage with his customers and share his rich cultural history. As Asha points out, the main ingredient in his food is ‘love’ and that is evident in all his meals. Try the Lionfish in garlic for instance. Not only do you enjoy a great meal, you also help the environment by getting rid of an unwelcome predator in the Caribbean eco-system. Asha can tell you all about it.
Asha also offers interesting cultural tours from his restaurant.
1. Barranco and/or Punta Negra Community visit – Take a boat ride to the Garifuna village of Barranco or the Creole fishing community of Punta Negra, where you will learn about their traditional way of life, eat their cultural foods and have the opportunity to further support the villages by purchasing crafts or sweets.
2. Creole Cultural Immersion – Experience a half day of ‘Kriol Kulcha” where you will have a fire-hearth cooking class, either a sambai or drum lesson, lunch (that you helped prepare) a dance presentation and a cultural talk.
Enough to explore; Asha’s where the action is. Check it out!
